The psychological support for children after experiencing disaster

About the children who were 2 years old and 3 years old in the Great East Japan Earthquake.

The news about people who live in the area stricken by the Great East Japan Earthquake have considerably decreased except the stricken area of Tohoku.

Even the specialistgiving mental support are already interested in Nankai Trough massive earthquake.

I want you to know the following.

The children who were 2 years old and 3 years old during the tsunami disaster are first graders, respectively second graders in elementary schools now

About 25% of those kids freeze or are likely to cry only by hearing the word tsunami.

I have been visiting the coast of Iwate three days a month as a supervisor, and have worked with school counselors.

And I have conducted various Kokoro-no-Support lessons with counselors and teachers.

The word Kokoro is Japanese, and means mental or heart or mind.

I have introduced the "Disaster prevention learning and Kokoro-no-Support lesson to the second grade students of one coastal elementary school in November.

Tomy said:When you were 3 years old, a serious thing happened. Then, you have conducted the evacuation training in order to protect your life. But are there students who think "I dislike the evacuation training."?

I handed in a paper with the pain rating scale for disaster prevention to each student in the class.

Tomy said :If you dont want to check this questionnaire, it is Ok you dont need to do it. This is not test. Lets check how painful each item is for you.

Tomy said: Give score 0 if you dont feel pain at all. Give score 10 if you feel pain at the maximum level. What score do you give?

<I turned on CD of the theme song of Doraemon. >.

A classroom teacher wore a Doraemon costume and came into the classroom. Doraemon doesnt look nice.

Children felt pleasure only by staring at their teacher wearing a Doraemon costume.

Tomy asked Doraemon:You dont look fine. Did you sleep well last night?

Doraemon said: " I cant sleep night these days."

(I ask children about the ways of coping with the stress to fall asleep easier.)

Tomy asked children: Please teach Doraemon how to fall asleep."

(Children may say the following. It is good to eat Dorayaki. It is good to count sheeps. It is good to think of the pleasant things.)

Tomy said; "You know various ways of falling asleep easier. I recommend Doraemon and you the relaxation exercise for sleeping. Please try it.

(The low grade version of progressive relaxation)

Doraemon said:"I feel a bit better. But still, I am not calm."

Tomy asked him:What are you scared of?

I asked children What makes him scared?

 Children said: Mouse!

Doraemon cried. "Do not say that word"!

Tomy asked children :Why?

Children said:Because mouse bites his ears

Tomy said to children It is scary for Doraemon. How can you help Doraemon! Please tell Doraemon how to overcome his fear.

A certain child said, "He becomes friends with the stuffed mouse toy."

I was surprised at her proposal.

Because it agrees with habituation theory for recovery from trauma!

I asked children : But does word mouse bites his ears?

Children said :The word mouse does not bite his ear

Tomy said :Thats right! A word is safe

Tomy said :If he can use the word "mouse while calming down, he can think about how to cope with a mouse.

Tomy asked children:When a mouse comes near him, how will he deal with it?

Tomy asked children:The mouse has come from afar! What does Doraemon do at such a time? Please tell Doraemon how to cope with the mouse!

Children may say the following. It is good to attack him. It is good to make friends with him. It is good not to think of him. Or It is good to make it not be scared. It is good to escape to a safe place.

Tomy said: "You always train to save your life from disaster. What?"

Child said :Evacuation training

Tomy said:Thats right! I made mouse alarm equipment. If a mouse approaches, a siren will sound. If a siren sounds, he "can escape to safe place.

Tomy asked children:A siren's sound is a disagreeable sound. But if it is comfortable for you, what do you do?

Children said Nobody escapes.

Tomy said :A siren is an important sound which protects your life.

Tomy said:Even if you go to a safe place, your heart doesnt throb and it still does not calm down? Then, it is good to play a pleasant game with your friends. It is good to relax to calm down.

You are still not calm, your heart is beating fast.

At such time, it is good to learn two methods.

 First is the breathing method.

It is good to straighten your back, to take a deep breath and to exhale slowly.

The second is the relaxed method of the shoulders.

Straighten your back, and raise your shoulders higher.

Relax your shoulders slowly and release the tension.

You may feel calmer while you relax your shoulders.

Pull back your shoulders.

Let's check if there is any tension in your neck or arms or legs.

And then, relax your shoulders.

Tomy said children The word tsunami is safe too. If you can use the word "tsunami while calming down, you can think about how to cope with tsunami.

Children checked pain rating scale, and wrote comment for this lesson.

A school counselor, Mr. Tomoharu Watabe, proposed trauma care for children with using Doraemon.

I conducted this lesson two classes at second grader elementary school in tsunami striken area.

Children commented the follow:

I was afraid in the beginning when I heard the word tsunami." However, since I became gradually less afraid, I feel good now.

Although I was scary at first, I became gradually scary less.

I thought Tsunami voice only was not scary. Thank you Tomy!
